Harry Potter: The Role of gryffindor sword
The exciting journey of Harry Potter came to an end with the death of Voldemort. Though the last part of the exotic series featured the story of the elder wand; yet the major show was the return of the sword of gryffindor and the exhilarating moment that Neville used it to behead Nagini. This was the moment that transformed Neville into the war hero.

The sword made its first appearance in the second installment of the series, The Chamber of Secrets. The godric gryffindor sword was fashioned from pure silver by the goblins, who are the best metal workers. The sword was originally designed for the Ragnuk the First. The godric gryffindor sword was then sold to Gryffindor; however the Goblin history claims that Godric stole it from Ragnuk. But these suspicions can neither be confirmed nor asserted since the goblin history tends to portray wizards as the bad guys.

Physical Description of Gryffindor’s Sword

Godric Gryffindor was the founder of one of the four Hogwarts houses which was named after him. The qualities that set the Gryffindors apart are their valor and bravery. The sword of gryffindor itself was fashioned from pure silver. The name of its owner Godric Gryffindor is engraved just beneath the harry potter sword hilt. The hilt of the Gryffindor sword is set with rubies. Rubies are the same stones which are used to represent the points of Gryffindor house in the huge hour glass outside the Great Hall.

Properties of the Gryffindor’s Sword

The godric gryffindor sword has magical properties. Being goblin made, it imbibes all those things that impart it strength. The first time that Harry pulls the sword out of the hat was in the Chamber of Secrets when he had to battle the Basilisk. Though Harry is confused by Tom’s remarks about their apparent similarity of character between them; Dumbledore reassures Harry asserting that only a true Gryffindor could have pulled it out of the hat. The sword was then used by Harry to kill the Basilisk after an exhausting fight, thus the Gryffindor’s sword was imbued with Basilisk’s venom.

Thereafter the Gryffindor’s sword stayed in Dumbledore’s study. The Basilisk’s venom gave the Gryffindor’s sword the ability to destroy horcruxes and hence the same sword was used by Dumbledore to destroy the horcrux in the Gaunt’s house. The sword of gryffindor was left to Harry after Dumbledore’s death however Scrimgeour, the then Minister for Magic, declared the Gryffindor’s sword a historic relic and not Dumbledore’s property to pass on to anyone thus refusing to hand it over to Harry.

However Dumbledore, wise and clever as he was, had anticipated this turn of events and had hidden the original sword replacing it with a replica. The task of delivering the harry potter sword to Harry without him being any wiser about it, was assigned to Snape. However, Snape had to plan it thoroughly so as to ensure that the conditions of winning the sword could be met, i.e. it should be won under the conditions of true need and bravery.

As he tries to retrieve the godric gryffindor sword from the bottom of a frozen lake, the Voldemort’s locket tries to strangle Harry and Ron pulls him to safety. Finally the horcrux within the locket is destroyed by Ron by stabbing it with the sword.

The harry potter sword is ultimately stolen by Griphook during the invasion of Gringotts to acquire yet another horcrux, the Hufflepuff’s cup, from the Lestrange vault. During the final battle at Hogwarts, Neville is tortured by Voldemort and in the crucial time of need, the Gryffindor’s sword comes to rescue the true Gryffindor that Neville is. He pulls the harry potter sword out of the hat and uses it to behead Nagini, thus destroying the last of the horcruxes and leaving the path clear for Harry to finish Voldemort for good. Had it not been for the Sword of Gryffindor, it would have been impossible to bring the downfall of Voldemort’s regime.
